True Confessions - Number 3

True confession number 3:
Orange 1's actual name comes from an old Julia Roberts movie.
Piggy's name:  I lost a bet with a dude in a bar. I was in college, we were at a pub, we were playing playing online trivia and I was sure I was going to win. I promised to name my firstborn son after him if I lost, I was not going to lose. I lost! The big guy vetoed it for the first but I got it in there for number two. I think thats almost holding true to my word. So Mr. Percy if you're out there this one is for you.
Shhh don't tell the big guy. I don't think I've told him.

A Moment

He asks me to lay down with him, he doesn't normally, so I do.
He puts his head in my hand and reaches to hold the other.
I know its been a hard day.
He finally falls asleep with his hand pressed to his temple as if deep in thought.
He is warm, he is cuddly, he is mine.
I love him so.
I stay long after he has fallen asleep.

There is a moment, even in the longest and the worst of bedtimes. The trick is to notice it.

Is it a bad night?

Is it a bad night because it's a bad night. Is it a bad night because things have changed? Is it a bad night because I am making it so or because it is so?
Things have been going really well, this has been our best carnie on tour trip yet, but tonight I was done, ready for a break. Did this cause the chaos or did the chaos cause this. Bedtime was a disaster on everybody's part. Was it me, was it them? Who knows.
Orange 1 and piggy share a room, Orange 1 asked for Piggy to share the room and loves it. I can't believe how much he loves Piggy. We have pictures of "the Daddy"taped to the wall and it helps. Every night before bed we say "night night daddy" and we give the picture a kiss and look at it for a while. In the day when the daddy calls we talk on speakerphone and tonight we had speakerphone chat with the daddy during bedtime. Orange 1 pretty much refuses to talk to him but he listens intently. During bedtime was a mistake. I hung up and the disaster that followed was so emotional. I found another picture of the daddy in a frame and asked if he wanted to hold it, he did. He fell asleep staring lovingly at the daddy picture and it broke my heart. I can fix a lot of things, I can be a lot of things, but I can't be the daddy, no matter how hard I try. There were some tears.

Orange 1

Today I looked at the tiny striped sock, then I touched it, then I smelled it's familiar scent. It made my heart ache and it was hard to breathe.

The hard bite of reality at the ripe age of 2

Background: Orange 1 is watching a movie Polar Express (I'm sick, it has trains, we all win), in it a star falls and an Elf jumps after it and saves it or something along those lines, I wasn't really paying attention.

I overhear this conversation: Husband " I just want you to know that what we just witnessed isn't actually possible and can only happen in movies unless you neglect the aspect of wind resistance, I just want you to know that this couldn't happen in real life and......acceleration due to gravity....9.8m/s(squared)....elf.. theoretical......"

Me "What!?"
Husband: "Whaaat? He should know"

Please note Orange 1 is only 2

The story of Orange 1

The other day I was reading my friends blog and she was talking about how her dad had passed and how a simple smell from an old bag brought back a flood of feelings and memories and I had the same thing happen last week. It was a sock. A tiny infant sized red and white striped sock. Orange 1 had surgery when he was little and I don't usually talk about it. I say things like "Orange 1 had surgery when he was little, oh he's fine now" But I don't go into details. I think because I'm still so heartbroken about it. Even now typing I find the tears rolling and last week thats how I found myself sitting on the bed crying to a tiny striped sock. Maybe if I share my story it will help me and maybe help someone else too. Here is the story of Orange 1.
O1 was born 5 weeks early, he was tiny and beautiful. Some babies look beautiful right out of the gate (our 2nd sadly did not, but he's a cutie now), O1 was beautiful and perfect. He spent a week in intensive care in a little glass box. It was awful. I had to share a room in the very beginning with what I can only say was a trashy lady complaining about how her baby was up all night while mine was locked in a little box and I wasn't allowed to hold him. I cried a lot those first days. I always say the nurses knew me as the mom who cried. The week progressed, my wonderful doctor demanded the nurses allow me to hold him, we started to nurse, it was going well. On day 5 they told us about "it". He had a VSD and muscle bundles. Basically there was a hole in his heart and the blood was leaking back and getting double pumped. I can still remember sitting there, I think the world fell away. Its a feeling you only know once you've had it.
We were sent home with follow up care and appointments till the end of time. Those first few months were so hard. He was so little, the heart condition made him tired but he didn't feel good so it was hard to sleep. He slept maybe 8 hours in any 24 hour period. We started drugs, we had to give him medicine 7 times a day. I was so sad. I felt and still feel like it was my fault. I made him and I didn't do a good enough job. My husband says its not but I really feel deep down that it is. We finally came to the great and terrible day. He had surgery October 20th, he was 5 1/2 months old and 15 pounds. The day came and I was okay I was just in denial but the night before I found myself drinking the better part of a bottle of wine and crying uncontrollable at 2 in the morning. So I did as anyone would do, I called my mom (4am her time) and she said in the very nicest most peaceful way " I thought I'd hear from you". I didn't want to do it, the surgery, she convinced me that I had to. She was right. She told me that if I didn't he'd never be able to play sports, he'd have a hard time just going up stairs, he wouldn't grow, and so we did it. It was a monday morning, it was cloudy, and cold, much like me. We put him on a giant wheeling table and he cried and I cried so they let me carry him. Then we waited in this little waiting area and he wore these little red and white striped socks because I was afraid his feet were too cold. The rest of the story doesn't matter, its long done with. Yesterday we played kick ball in the yard and he laughed and shouted and ran. All that remains is a long scar on his chest and a little red and white sock that no longer fits. Every time I see that little sock my heart feels broken all over again.
I should be grateful, I should be happy, but I still have fear. I'm not sure what exactly I'm afraid of, but I am. I think it will pass. Life moves on, I'm living it.
If you've found this story you'v probably googled infant VSD or baby surgery. You should know this too shall pass and if you need someone just ask, I'll always take time to help someone on the same road. Time may have passed but I remember, I remember the smells, the waiting, the sadness and the hard road that followed but I also know the laughter and the joy of healthy little orange haired monster.

Wake up calls

My husband is away this week which leaves me alone with the orange haired monsters. Every time he leaves the big one stops sleeping which is less than ideal for me. Last night while we were up for the third time I couldn't help but think wishfully about my pre-children days when I saw 2 am from the other side. Now the only time I see 2 am is when I'm thinking "is it too early to just suck it up and get up for the day" as opposed to "do I have enough change left in my pocket for a hotdog and a taxi".

Morning wake up call

Every morning between 4 and 5 30 am I wake up in complete darkness to the sound of heavy breathing directly in my ear. It is orange 1 coming to say good morning, he comes into our room every morning, bypasses my husband and comes to my side of the bed where instead of announcing himself he breathes like a stalker in my ear. To be honest its absolutely terrifying. This has been going on for about a month. So everyday for a month I have woken up in complete fear. Its funny to tell the story but I seriously think its causing some long term damage to my heart.

PS I didn't choose this side of the bed by fluke, it was specifically to bypass the morning wake up calls. Do you think thats karma?
